DO IT YOUR
WHEY
Get your curds & whey going and enter your own cheese in the
82nd Red Hill Agricultural and Horticultural Show to be held at the Red Hill
Showgrounds on Saturday, March 26th 2011.
Red Hill
Cheese collaborates with the
Show organisers to provide a forum for home cheesemakers to exhibit their efforts
in friendly competition with others. Have your cheese tasted and commented upon
by experienced cheese judges and maybe win the coveted title of
Champion Non-Commercial Cheese of the Red Hill Show!
There is an amazing quality and range of cheese being produced
by home cheese makers, some of whom have attended cheesemaking workshops at Red
Hill Cheese and have gone on to create sensational cheese in their home kitchens.
We would also encourage entries from people who have been making cheese to old family
recipes - perhaps handed down over generations - a chance to meet others
with a similar interest.
The
rules are simple - non-commercial cheesemakers must enter at least 100gms of
any style of cheese. It doesn't matter what style of cheese
you make, bring it along and the judges will categorize the entries prior to making
their deliberations.
One
of the best success stories of Mornington Peninsula produce is that of Red Hill
Cheese. Jan and Trevor Brandon started making cheese in April 2000 and now
employ 8 part-time staff producing 18 styles of cheese from sheep, goat and cow
milk. One of their most popular is the sublime, award-winning "Misty Valley" - a brie-style goat cheese. Somehow they manage to keep up with the huge demand for their
cheese without compromising their handmade production values.
The Cheesery 'Cellar Door' Shop at
81 William Road, Red Hill Cheese is open weekends and public holidays from 12 noon to 5pm. Trevor, an ex-science
teacher, specialises in hand made traditional styles with plenty of flavour.
